Vacation, Expertise, and Thoughts
• publicTable of contents
I was on vacation with some friends this week, we were at the beach, working remotely. I was the only one being independent, so it was more waiting for them for all of their meeting and team stuff but it was fun.
During this week, it was more about thinking about how I want to lead my life and my work. What I really want to do and how. And today I'm gonna talk about it.
Thoughts
Something I'm sure about is that I love bug hunting and I want it to be the most of my time. Simply because I love this job, it's rewardful, interesting, hard and you are totally free of your time.
But I don't want it to be the only thing I do. Because you will have some time where you are not in it, you don't find any bugs, you are not very motivated in working. And it's normal. I'm currently in this phase and I know that it's just a period and I will come back looking into bugs.
During this time, I still need to do something. I can learn new stuff about hacking and learn new techniques, I can also automate stuff which is quite a good idea. And I can also work on another project not related to bug bounty which is what I'm currently doing.
Not always doing the same thing is important for me, and I need to have the discipline to work on important stuff to cover my expenses.
So to summarize, I don't plan to change what I'm doing currently as I'm perfectly happy with this way. But I still want to get expertise on something and that was the aim of my thoughts.
Expertise
Looking at hacking and bug bounty, you have different ways to be good at it. You can be the first on a scope, monitor everything, and be here for new updates. It's possible using automation and be always here.
You can also make a lot of collaboration and find people that are better than you in some field and get help on some target.
You can be strong on a lot of topics and be more disciplined than others.
And finally, you can be an expert on something, have a special knowledge of a specific technology, and hunt mainly on it. With that, people will come to you for collaboration.
All of these possibilities are very nice, and we have a lot of examples of very great hackers in all of these fields.
But personally, I'm always impressed by the people being an expert on something. It's been since I was young that I've been looking for people being very very good at a specific topic. And it's very hard to be the best at a specific topic.
Looking back on my life, I was always looking at being average at everything, and now I'm more into being specialized in something. Both are very good, but it's just a point of view.
So that's why now I'm looking for more for all fields in my life to find THE topic where I want to focus. Not to only do it, but to be very very good at something and average at the rest. Making a T-shaped expertise.
I've already told you that I wanted to learn more about client-side stuff and JavaScript. But after looking a lot into it, it's not something I really love. It's very interesting, and there are a lot of bugs of this type. But there are also a lot of people looking into it, and it's not especially something I love looking at it.
So I looked backward in my life to see what I really loved in the past, and what I've done, and I came to the conclusion that I want to be an expert on something else.
I've already told you in one of my first articles in this blog, and I will continue this week to improve my skills on it. I'm gonna talk more about it next week, so you will need to wait before I tell you the topic.
Ideas / Notes / Resources
- I found an alternative to Vercel and also a lot of other hosting. It's always a pain to set up a lot of services, docker files, setup a traefik to have an https, etc. I used pwnmachine from Bitk lately but I've now found coolify which is more advanced and it fits more how I want to store my stuff on my VPS. It can be useful if you are developing stuff or simply if you want to manage stuff like ezxss or bug bounty stuff
- I'm also proud of the French Team for the Hackerone AWC for the first place in this round!
